Bunn coffee makers are extremely popular appliances found in kitchens everywhere. They’re used in both personal and commercial settings. Today we will share three easy methods of how to clean a bunn coffee maker in between uses as well as share some handy tips to ensure you do this properly.
To get the most out of your Bunn coffee maker, you need to ensure that your coffee pot stays clean, free from germs, and well maintained. This preventative maintenance doesn’t have to be difficult.
Besides the obvious benefits of having a clean coffee pot, regular cleaning ensures that your coffee pot will last longer—giving you more bang for your buck. The pot and machine should be washed between uses; the outside should be regularly wiped down & the whole machine needs to be thoroughly cleaned every three months or so.
How to Clean a Bunn Coffee Maker
Thankfully, there are quite a few methods of cleaning a Bunn coffee maker—all of which are easy. Before we jump into three of three methods, we will go over the basics of coffee maker cleaning:
- No matter which method of cleaning you use always make sure the coffee maker is unplugged. This ensures that you don’t accidentally turn on the machine and heat the liquids you’re using for cleaning. Also, special care and safety precautions must always be taken when dealing with liquids & electronics.
- Do less work for yourself by keeping the outside of your Bunn coffee maker clean. Regularly wipe down the entire outside of the machine with a damp cloth and some mild dishwasher detergent. Don’t let your connections get dusty either as this can hinder performance.
- Remove and wash the brew funnel once or twice a week to keep your Bunn coffee maker in tip-top condition.
- Avoid using scented dishwashing soap with a strong fragrance. The scent will stick to and linger in the coffee pot & transmit into the coffee itself. And nobody wants dish soap flavored cup of coffee.
- You should thoroughly clean your Bunn coffee maker at least every three months.

Cleaning A Bunn Coffee Maker by Hand
With the help of mild dishwashing soap, washing your Bunn coffee maker by hand is easy. All you need is your dish soap or detergent, a cloth, and some warm water:
Step 1
Place your coffee maker in a solution of warm water and dish soap and let it soak for around 30 minutes.
Step 2
Use a sponge or soft cloth and clean the inside & outside of the coffee maker.
Step 3
Remove the coffee maker from the soap water solution and rinse out until the water runs clean & no soapy residue is left.
Step 4
Wipe it clean with a soft, dry cloth or leave it out to air dry.
Instead of soaking the coffee maker in water, you could also mix two drops of dish soap with two cups of water. You can then dip a soft cloth in this mixture and use this as a cleaning solution.
Avoid using any kind of abrasive scrubbing tools because these could scratch the glass or stainless steel elements. Stick to soft sponges, cloths or soft-bristled brushes to clean your coffee pot.
Cleaning A Bunn Coffee Maker in the Dishwasher
One of the reasons why Bunn coffee makers are so popular is because they’re dishwasher safe. The process is easy:
Necessary Steps
Step 1
Give your coffee maker a quick wipe with a paper towel or cloth to remove any oily residue or coffee gunk buildup.
Step 2
Next, place your coffee maker in your dishwasher. For best results, place it upside down to ensure it is properly cleaned.
Step 3
Finally, wash the pot on your regular cycle.
Use a mild detergent for best results. Make sure to remove the lid as this part is not dishwasher safe when handwashing the lid; make sure to pay attention to the valve in the center of the lid.
Cleaning a Bunn Coffee Maker with Vinegar
When you notice stains and mineral deposits appearing on the sides or bottom of the coffee pot, it is time to give it a proper clean. You can use white vinegar or descaling solution to completely clean your Bunn coffee pot.

Step 5
Now turn off the machine and let the vinegar soaks in the pot for around four hours.
Step 6
After the time interval completed pour the brewer with 14 oz fresh cold water or distilled water and run the machine to flush out vinegar and mineral deposit or other tough stains inside the Bunn coffee pot.
Step 7
Once the pot has been emptied; you need to rinse it out a few times.
Step 8
Wash the pot with warm water.
Step 9
Gently scrub the sides and bottom and watch the stains disappear.
Pro Tips: Use this above cleaning process to clean its internal system at least every 3 month of interval. You can also watch the above video instruction instead of the method.
You can also clean your Bunn coffee maker by slightly adapting the beginning of this method, depending on how much time you have available to clean. Instead of filling the entire pot with vinegar as seen in step 1, you can slowly pour vinegar into the top of the brewer where you normally pour your coffee from. Let the vinegar slowly drip through the funnel and into the pot until it’s full. Once the pot is full, empty it out into the sink and pick up again from step 4.
Be sure to rinse the pot repeatedly as white vinegar is an incredibly effective cleaning solution, but it can be difficult to remove the sharp scent it leaves behind.
If you don’t want to use vinegar, many Bunn coffee maker owners opt to use Coca-Cola instead of this somewhat harsh ingredient. The process of removing the scent of Coca-Cola is not as difficult as removing that of vinegar. Coca-Cola cleans coffee makers well but can leave a sticky residue so be sure to rinse the pot thoroughly after cleaning.
